The WMS Soccer program began ten years ago this season. In 2023, the WMS Wildcats had their first-ever undefeated season, going 8-0.
The 2024 season was nothing less than spectacular. Going into the end of season, the ‘Cats were 7 wins, 1 loss, and 2 ties. There were four teams in this District Tournament, the Sacred Heart Lions, South Lawrence Stallions, Lewis County Panthers, and our very own WMS Wildcats. The ‘Cats had previously suffered a loss to Lewis County early in the season (4-1), and later tied with them in a match here at the Waynesboro Sportsplex.
In the first round of the tournament on Thursday, April 18th, Sacred Heart was defeated by Lewis County in an overtime shootout. The ‘Cats faced a tough South Lawrence team and were led to victory by their very own Ty Skipworth, scoring the team's only goal that match. The ‘Cats defeated South Lawrence 1-0 to advance to the championship match against Lewis County. Lewis County had the number 1 seed in the tournament and the ‘Cats had the number 2 seed.
Lewis County was the home team going into the championship game, and it was a close game from kickoff. The team's very own Nathaniel Hernandez gave the ‘Cats the lead over the Panthers by scoring a penalty kick over a very tough Panther goalie. Later during the second half, the ‘Cats scored their second goal by Ty Skipworth which placed the ‘Cats ahead 2-0. With approximately four minutes left in the match, the Panthers were able to score their only goal of the game. The ‘Cats defeated the Panthers in the championship game, 2-1, to give the ‘Cats their first championship trophy.
In the last two seasons, the ‘Cats have an overall record of 17 wins, 1 loss, and 2 ties. Izzie Scaife received the All-Tournament Best Defender Award and Nathaniel Hernandez was selected as All Tournament MVP.
