Middle school football season has arrived, though summer is still in the air. The Waynesboro Middle School Wildcats opened their season on August 15 against the Loretto Mustangs, and then faced the Eagles of Zion Christian on August 22. The Cats started their season pulling a 14-3 victory against the Mustangs at home and then traveled to Holcomb Field and snagged another victory, beating the Eagles 32-16.
In the home opener against Loretto, the Cats offense racked up 248 yards rushing, led by Logan Brewer with 9 carries for 131 yards and a touchdown. He was followed by Ryder Butler with 21 carries for 80 yards. Quarterback Carden Venable had 8 carries for 37 yards to include a touchdown.
Defensively, the Wildcats were led by Ryder Butler with 6 tackles and 1 assist. Isaiah Gresham had 1 assist and a fumble recovery. Drew Bevis had 2 tackles and 2 assists. Carden Venable had 2 tackles. Austin McFadden and Sayler Skelton each had 1 assist. David-Grant Dixon and Aaron Martin each had a tackle. Carden Venable and Jaxon Pope both had a hand in a pass break-up.
In the second game of the season, the WMS Cats held the Zion Christian Eagles scoreless until late in the 4th quarter. The offense was led by Sayler Skelton who had 3 carries for 102 yards to include the opening touchdown. Logan Brewer had 3 carries for 55 yards with a touchdown and a 2-point conversion. Ryder Butler had 47 yards rushing on 4 carries with a touchdown and 2-point conversion. He also had one 30-yard touchdown pass reception from quarterback, Carden Venable. Dane Bryant had 3 carries for 30 yards. Bo Odle had 5 carries for 15 yards to help the Cats with a total of 240 yards rushing for the game.
Once again, the defense proved to be too strong for the WMS opponent. The Cats were led by Logan Brewer with 4 tackles and 4 assists. Ryder Butler had 4 tackles and 2 assists while Jakob Nienast had 3 tackles and 3 assists. Carden Venable had 2 tackles and 1 assist while Bo Odle had 2 tackles. Austin McFadden had 1 tackle with 3 assists. Brayden Littleton power housed his way for 2 assists and 1 tackle. Alex Ronchetti had 1 tackle and 1 assist. Isaiah Gresham had 1 tackle. Brady Stooksberry had 2 assists. Sayler Skelton, Drew Bevis, Baker Bryant, and Dane Bryant each had 1 assist.
