Nashville news outlets reported last week that Waynesboro resident Gerry Neil Weatherby, age 45, had been arrested after being indicted by a Davidson County grand jury for murder.
Daniel Shields was found dead in his home on July 10, 2018 after leaving his shift at Nashville’s Trax bar on July 4 and never being heard from again. Reports stated that Shields’ body was found bound in dozens of items, including a yellow cord, a pair of jeans, a bed sheet, a phone charger cord, and a shoelace, in addition to other items. His body was in a state of decomposition that made determining his exact cause of death difficult. An autopsy found that Shields most likely died from a combination of wounds, listing the cause of death as multimodality trauma. His death was ruled a homicide.
Weatherby, who was confirmed by Wayne County Sheriff Shane Fisher to be a resident of Morrow Street in Waynesboro, was arrested in Waynesboro last week and is being held in jail in Davidson County in lieu of a $150,000.00 bond. He faces charges of first-degree murder and especially aggravated kidnapping. Sheriff Fisher stated that Weatherby had lived in Wayne County for several years, and was relatively well-known as a handyman.
Details surrounding Weatherby’s involvement in Shields’ murder have not been released. His arraignment has been scheduled for May 29.
