The Butterfly Foundation’s annual 5K Run/Walk is coming up this Saturday, June 1st, at the Waynesboro City Park. Race day registration begins at 6:15 a.m. and continues until 7:30 a.m. The Run starts PROMPTLY at 8:00 a.m.
This will be the 10th year for this fundraiser for the Foundation, which was begun by the Ryleigh Stegall family after little Ryleigh’s death from leukemia in 2007. The money raised goes to families who have children with life-threatening or life-altering conditions in Wayne and surrounding counties. The 5K event is the main fundraiser for the Foundation.
Last year’s race netted $90,000 in sponsorship money, and while that sounds like a lot, the Foundation gave $100,000 in grant money to families of seriously ill children in our local area. Since its inception in 2007, the Butterfly Foundation has helped with monetary grants totaling $610,770 to the families of over 265 children. Without the sponsors, including both businesses and private individuals, The Butterfly Foundation would not be able to help all these deserving families.
Last year’s race saw over 500 runners/walkers, and hopefully even more will participate this year. This is one of the premier 5K races in Middle Tennessee and is USATF Certified. A USATF Certified 1-mile race for kids 12 and under will also be held.
A beautiful butterfly quilt, made by Jean Nutt and Lisa White and donated as a fundraiser, will be given away on the day of the Run. Donations on the quilt will be taken up to the give-away time at the Run on June 1. It is not required that the winner be present at the time of the drawing.
Everyone is encouraged to come out on Saturday and support this very worthy cause!
