Ending Emissions Testing – Public Chapter 953 ends mandatory emissions tests for vehicles in Tennessee. Applies to Hamilton, Davidson, Rutherford, Sumner, Williamson or Wilson Counties where the test is still required prior to vehicle registration or renewal. The 1990 Federal Clean Air Act required the State of Tennessee to develop more restrictive regulations to control air pollution from mobile sources in counties which were not meeting the Federal Standards for air quality. In August, the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation announced that the entire State of Tennessee meets federal air quality health standards.
Driver Convenience / Vehicle Registration – Public Chapter 606 authorizes drivers in Tennessee to display evidence of motor vehicle registration in electronic format. This allows for the convenience of providing that information on the driver’s phone or another electronic device if pulled over by law enforcement. Tennessee law already allows drivers to use electronic devices to show proof of insurance.
National Guard License Plates – Public Chapter 691 allows a surviving spouse of a National Guard member to be issued a National Guard license plate until he or she remarries. The bill is the latest in a series of initiatives designed to ensure that those who defend our state and our country are not forgotten.
