Waynesboro Man Assaulted In His Home By Burglars
Waynesboro Police are looking for two suspects who allegedly broke into a Thunderbird Drive home Saturday night, set fire to it, and assaulted the owner after he arrived home and went inside to investigate.
Barry Pierce of 208 Thunderbird Drive told Police he was struck in the right side of the head by one of two suspects as he investigated a possible burglary in progress. The fire appeared to have created enough damage to make the house a total loss.  Read More | Post Comment

W’boro Teen To Sing At N’ville Sounds Ball Game
Anna Ray, daughter of Jerry and Kim (Vencion) Ray, will sing the National Anthem at the Nashville Sounds baseball game Monday, July 6 at 7 P.M.
A 2009 graduate of Wayne County High School, Anna auditioned for the role and was one of the top 15 singers selected. During her senior year, Anna sang the National Anthem at all of the WCHS basketball games as well as the district and regional tournaments. Read More | Post Comment

Waynesboro Commissioners Vote To Hire S. R. Officer
Waynesboro City Commissioners voted unanimously Monday night to hire a School Resource Officer (SRO) for Waynesboro schools and the search for a candidate is already underway.
Police Chief Keith Reeves told Commissioners he wanted an SRO officer hired by mid-July so that the person could finish an eight-week Police Academy course and be on the job by mid-September. Read More | Post Comment

Clifton Commission Is Told New City Hall To Face Pillow
City Manager Dana Deem told Clifton City Commissioners at their June meeting that the new City Hall approved in May could not be built facing Main Street.
Deem said the property adjacent to the existing City Hall at the corner of Main and Pillow Street was simply not available. The Main Street property was preferred for its visibility but now the project will have to go forward facing Pillow, behind the current City Hall. Read More | Post Comment

Wayne County 9-10 All-Stars State Bound
Wayne County Dixie Youth Baseball 9 and 10 year old All Stars won the District Three tournament on Thursday evening, June 25th. This years tournament was hosted by the Loretto Dixie Youth. They will play in the Dixie Youth Class AAA state tournament in Bolivar beginning on Friday, July 17th. Annual History Fair July 11th At W.C.H.S.
The annual Wayne County History and Crafts Fair will be held Saturday, July 11 from 9 A.M. until 1 P.M. at Wayne County High School. Admission to the fair is free but small per person donation will be accepted.

Wayne’s Jobless Rate Rises To 13% In May
Wayne County’s unemployment rate increased to 13.0 percent in May, the first rise in joblessness for the county after three straight months of decline.
Wayne County followed the statewide trend of unemployment increases that saw 88 counties’ rates go up from April’s rates while only six declined. Tennessee’s 10.7 percent jobless rate in May was the highest since November 1983 and was up from April’s 9.9 percent. Read More | Post Comment

Former Sheriff’s Deputy Is Arrested On Forgery Charges
Former Wayne County Sheriff’s Deputy Nicky Lee Langford, 32, of Iron City, is free on bond after his June 25 arrest on 15 counts of forgery.

Legislature Increases Taxable Wage Base
The Tennessee General Assembly recently passed a law increasing Tennessee’s taxable wage base from $7,000 to $9,000. Maria Pulley, daughter of Dion and Eleonore Pulley, recently attended the American Legion Auxiliary Volunteer Girls’ State at MTSU in Murfreesboro. She was sponsored by the local Waynesboro Auxiliary. In her city at VGS, she was appointed to the powerboard committee. At the end of the week, her essay was chosen to be read in the closing assembly. When asked about her experience, she replied, “It changed my life and way of thinking. Dual Enrollment Held C.S. Clifton Campus
Dual enrollment orientation and pre-registration session for students residing in Wayne County will be held July 21 from 6 till 7:30 P.M. at the Columbia State’s Clifton campus.

A bridge dedication ceremony was held recently for the Herbert C. L. Thurman / James “Jack” Andrews Memorial Bridge on Hurricane Creek Road. Herbert Cecil Lee Thurman was born May 21, 1904 and he married Blanche Risner in 1927. Their house was built in 1946 and they had two children Terry Lee Wayne Thurman and Patsy Elaine Thurman. As I left the Collinwood City Commission meeting Monday night, June 15, I was somewhat dismayed (not surprised) as the commission seemed to completely ignore the VOICE AND WILL of the people, who on very short notice, filled the meeting room to be heard. As the result the change in the ordinance to allow beer sales in the City of Collinwood passed. The ordinance existing since 1977 limited the sale of packaged beer to within 2000 feet of a Church, park, school or any place of public gathering. Everett McCoy Howell, 92, of Waynesboro, TN departed this life on Saturday, June 27, 2009 at Wayne County Nursing Home in Waynesboro.
He was born June 5, 1917 in Nansemond, VA, the son of the late Everett J. and Haddy McCoy Howell. He was united in marriage to Rebecca Loretta McWilliams on January 8, 1950 and Mrs. Howell preceded him in death on July 1, 1999.
